There are three common weeds that like to take advantage of the warmer weather here in Texas. And while it’s good for them, it means more of a headache for you. 1. Creeping Charlie

Creeping Charlie can easily be identified thanks to its square stems and circular ivy leaves with scalloped edges. When crushed or mowed, creeping Charlie will give off a distinct minty aroma. You’ll start to see them bloom with light blue or purple flowers in late spring/early summer. This plant thrives in compacted and poorly drained soils and is one of the more difficult weeds to control in Texas. The best way to control creeping Charlie is by applying post-emergent treatments when the flowers are in bloom—which is anywhere from April to June. Then, you should administer another treatment in late fall when the plants send food reserves to their roots.

2. Dandelions

Dandelions are one of the most well-known weeds here in Texas. They are easily identified by their bright, yellow petals that start blooming in the spring, and they’ll continue growing throughout the year. Dandelions will grow just about anywhere, regardless of soil conditions. They do tend to struggle in periods of high heat and drought, but these conditions usually aren’t enough to kill them. You want to treat dandelions by spot treating them with post-emergent herbicides. Apply these treatments when dandelions are actively growing in late summer and early fall for the best results.

3. Crabgrass

Crabgrass is one of the most persistent and annoying weeds to deal with here in Texas. You can spot them with their pointed, light green leaves. This weed prefers to grow in areas where it’s hot and dry and thrives in areas of your lawn that are thinner. The best way to handle crabgrass is with pre-emergent weed control treatments. You want to get rid of this weed before it can start developing seeds. Once these weeds establish themselves on your lawn, they can be quite difficult to eliminate with post-emergent treatments.
